Skills Based TreatmentSkills Based Treatment is a specific approach within ABA typically used for individuals who have more severe problem behavior that is impacting them across more than one setting. In this approach, staff of Balance Speech and Behavior assess and seek to understand the context in which the individual we are treating is able to reach a state of “happy, relaxed and engaged.” It is only when we have achieved this that we begin to teach communication, toleration and cooperation skills. The result is an emphasis on safety and relationships. |
Adolescent and Adult ServicesAs an individual on the spectrum matures, they often need very different supports to navigate adolescents and adulthood. Balance Speech and Behavior helps adolescents and adults in New Mexico who have Medicaid design a circle of care that helps them improve their quality of life, overcome obstacles, and enhance communication skills. New Mexico Medicaid expanded coverage of ABA services for adults and the service is meant to improve quality of life. |
Social Skills GroupsOne of our most popular offerings are biweekly social skills groups conducted on Zoom for elementary, middle school and high school aged individuals. Social skills groups make use of the PEERS curriculum developed by UCLA with some fun updates and resources uniquely designed to meet the developing needs of the individuals in the groups. We also try to meet up for in person outings monthly. Past social outings have included supported trips to Main Event, Slice and Dice and the BioPark. By popular demand, Balance Speech and Behavior created specialized social groups designed to assist with better understanding of dating and relationships for our teen and adult clients. |
Our Approach
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has become more accessible in New Mexico over the past ten years, but some families continue struggling to find the right fit. Balance Speech and Behavior believes that our clients and their families should have options. We are able to provide support in the home, community, school or work setting. In the past year alone, our RBTs have been to homes, community centers, shopping centers, schools (both public and private), food banks, and even colleges. We have assisted teens and adults find and benefit from volunteer opportunities in the community. We have attended cooking classes, ridden on public transportation, assisted with adaptive sports, learned to groom horses and care for gardens, swam and exercised, planned special events and made purchases with clients. The learning environment is all around you, and our staff will help you access it and thrive!
